Embodiment 1

[0172] Medical history and physical examination were performed on subjects meeting the inclusion criteria. All subjects will undergo standard drug screening tests. Subjects will complete the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the SF-36 to assess quality of life. All subjects will complete daily sleep records for two weeks. At the end of this "pilot" period, nighttime disturbance and early morning depression assessments will be conducted. After characterization, all subjects underwent comprehensive polysomnography (PSG) to measure esophageal pH. All subjects completed the questionnaire before going to sleep and after waking up in the morning. The questionnaire was designed to assess activity and mental status on the day preceding the sleep trial, to assess morning mental status, and subjective statements of wakefulness and heartburn symptoms experienced during the sleep trial.
