Abstract

The present invention relates to automatic configuration of synchronous block execution for control modules in a fieldbus network. A method or an apparatus automatically configures a control module for synchronous execution on a Fieldbus segment of a process control network by determining if all of the critical function blocks of a particular control module can be assigned to FOUNDATION(R) Fieldbus field devices or to the I / O device associated with a particular Fieldbus segment. If so, the method or apparatus automatically assigns the function blocks of the control module, which would otherwise be scheduled to execute in a controller, to the I / O device for the Fieldbus segment. This technique enables all of the critical or necessary function blocks within the control module to execute in one macrocycle of the Fieldbus segment, thereby executing synchronously on a Fieldbus segment. This operation increases the overall execution rate of the control module with respect to control modules that have function blocks split between a controller and field devices on the Fieldbus segment, which has been the traditional manner of configuring control modules implemented using devices on the Fieldbus segment.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application is a U.S. patent application entitled "Methods and Apparatus to Generate Schedules to Execute Functions in a Process Control System" filed on September 29, 2006 Serial No. 11 / 537,303 is a continuation-in-part of and claims priority from that application, the entire disclosure of which is hereby expressly incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] This patent relates generally to process control systems, and more specifically to assigning various functional blocks of a control module to input / output cards on a Fieldbus (Fieldbus) segment and generating schedules to synchronize among the Fieldbus segments The system that executes the function blocks of the control module. Background technique [0004] Process control systems, such as those used in chemical, petroleum, or other processes, typically include more than one centralized process controller that communicates via an analog bus, a digital bus, or a combined ...
