Embodiment Construction

[0019] The present disclosure generally relates to highly efficient light emitting articles and methods of forming the same. In particular, the present disclosure relates to light emitting articles having electrodes coplanar with the surface of a light emitting die or light emitting diode. These coplanar electrodes facilitate the optical coupling of the surface of the light emitting die or LED to the optical element or extractor. In various embodiments, the electrodes are patterned electrodes in the planarization layer of the light emitting die or LED, resulting in a uniform current flow across the surface of the light emitting die or LED. Such a patterned electrode allows a large portion of the surface of the light emitting die or LED to be unobstructed.

Abstract

A light emitting article (100) is disclosed and includes a light emitting diode (110) having an n-layer or p-layer (112) with a first refractive index value. A planarizing layer (160) having a refractive index value equal to or greater than the first refractive index value is disposed on the n-layer or p-layer, and a patterned electrode (130) is disposed on the n-layer or p-layer. An extractor (140) having a light input surface (141) is optically coupled to the planarizing layer.

Description

[0001] Related Patent Applications [0002] This patent application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 866,265, filed November 17, 2006, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] The present disclosure generally relates to highly efficient light emitting articles and methods of forming the same. [0004] Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have the inherent potential to achieve brightness, output, and operational lifetimes competitive with conventional light sources. However, the external efficiency of these devices is generally not good because only light over a small range of angles can escape from the high-index semiconductor material from which the LED is formed. [0005] The efficiency of LEDs can be increased by attaching high-index optical elements to the surface of the semiconductor material. High-index optics increase the range of angles at which light can escape from the surface of ...
