However, it is difficult to add media to standard bioassay dishes without rupturing, dislodging, or damaging the cells in the dish
Also, when bioassay vessels must be moved or manipulated, the large volumes of media that must be contained within such vessels can cause excessive movement or sloshing of the medium; due to the low profile or height of bioassay vessels, this is our unwanted

Embodiment Construction

[0023] Referring to the drawings, FIG. 1 illustrates one embodiment of an apparatus referred to herein as a culture vessel assembly 10 . The culture vessel assembly 10 includes a culture vessel 12 and a cover 14 configured for use with the culture vessel 12 for culturing organisms (eg, cells, tissues, etc.) in a wide range of medical applications. As shown in FIGS. 1-3 , the culture vessel 12 includes a generally planar bottom wall 16 and one or more side walls 18 projecting upwardly from its edges to define an interior cavity 20 . As shown, in one embodiment, culture vessel 12 may be generally square, having side walls 18a - 18d that combine with bottom wall 16 to form interior cavity 20 . Embodiments are not limited to the square configuration shown, but can also be arranged in a wide range of shapes and sizes. For example, Petri dish 12 may be generally rectangular, circular, oval, triangular, pentagonal, or the like.

Abstract

A device for culturing cells or tissue includes a culture dish (12) with a bottom wall (16) and at least one sidewall (18) to define an interior cavity (20), at least one channel (32) formed on the bottom wall (16) to minimize the effect of fluid movement on biologies in the dish and, optionally, at least one barrier wall (24) for partitioning the interior cavity (20) into a plurality of compartments (22). The barrier wall (24) maintains a biologic in one compartment separate from a biologic in another compartment. The barrier wall (24) may also provide fluid communication between compartments (22).

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to (pending) US Provisional Application No. 60 / 842,733, filed September 7, 2006, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] Cell and tissue culture devices. Background technique [0004] Tissue engineering is increasingly useful as a therapeutic tool, especially for treating skin wounds and vascular diseases, but also as a tool for testing certain pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. For example, many skin substitutes are commercially available. Most of these products consist of some type of porous matrix structure, usually infiltrated with fibroblasts to function as a dermal layer when used, and have a graft of keratinocytes or very thin epidermal daughter bodies as the epidermis. cortex. [0005] One such product is (Ortec International, Inc.), when used, a bilayer skin substitute with a collagen sponge comprising allogeneic de...
