Abstract

An image retrieval system includes an image entry unit configured to input an image. A descriptor determining unit receives the image and transforms the image into an intermediate image to generate adescriptor of the image, for example, utilizing the distance transform (DT) application. An image comparing unit compares the image with a plurality of candidate images by comparing the descriptor ofthe image with descriptors of the plurality of candidate images. Finally, a retrieving unit retrieves one or more candidate images similar to the input image based on the comparison of their descriptors.

Description

technical field [0001] This disclosure generally relates to image descriptors. Background technique [0002] Due to the widespread use of digital cameras, image editing software, and other related technologies, devices, or both, users are compelled to manage and manipulate digital images. An important aspect of digital imaging devices, software applications, or both, is to provide users with the ability to manage, retrieve, manipulate, and use images effectively and efficiently. Accordingly, efforts have been made to develop efficient and simple methods for retrieving images from storage devices. For example, in the field of image processing, the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) has developed several types of image retrieval applications. [0003] Typical image retrieval applications can generate image descriptors to index and retrieve images. The shape of an image is a useful feature in describing the use of the image. A shape can describe an image only in geographic...
