Problems solved by technology

Abiotic stress is the leading cause of crop loss worldwide, reducing the average yield of most major crop plants by more than 50% (Wang et al., Planta (2003) 218: 1-14)

Embodiment Construction

[0194] It has now surprisingly been found that increasing expression in plants of a nucleic acid sequence encoding an AHL19 / 20 polypeptide gives plants having enhanced seed yield-related traits without delayed flowering relative to control plants. According to a first embodiment, the present invention provides a method for enhancing seed yield-related traits in plants relative to control plants, comprising increasing expression in a plant of a nucleic acid sequence encoding an AHL19 / 20 polypeptide.

[0195] A preferred method of increasing the expression of a nucleic acid sequence encoding an AHL19 / 20 polypeptide is to introduce and express the nucleic acid sequence encoding an AHL19 / 20 polypeptide in plants.

[0196]In one embodiment, any "protein useful in the methods of the invention" mentioned below is understood to mean an AHL19 / 20 polypeptide as defined herein. Any "nucleic acid sequence usable in the method of the present invention" mentioned below should be understood ...

Abstract

The present invention relates generally to the field of molecular biology and concerns a method for increasing various plant yield-related traits by modulating expression in a plant of a nucleic acid sequence encoding a yield increasing polypeptide selected from the group consisting of: an AT-hook motif nuclear localized 19 / 20 (AHL19 / 20), a GRP (Growth Regulating Protein) (wherein said GRP polypeptide is a metallothionein 2a (MT2a) polypeptide), an alanine aminotransferase (AAT)-like polypeptide, and an alanine aminotransferase (AAT) polypeptide. The present invention also concerns plants having modulating expression of a nucleic acid sequence encoding a yield increasing polypeptide selected from the group consisting of: an AT-hook motif nuclear localized 19 / 20 (AHL19 / 20), a GRP (Growth Regulating Protein) (wherein said GRP polypeptide is a metallothionein 2a (MT2a) polypeptide), an alanine aminotransferase (AAT)-like polypeptide, and an alanine aminotransferase (AAT) polypeptide which plants have increased yield-related traits relative to control plants. The invention also provides constructs useful in the methods of the invention.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention generally relates to the field of molecular biology and relates to a method for enhancing various plant yield-related traits by increasing expression in a plant of a nucleic acid sequence encoding a yield-enhancing polypeptide selected from the group consisting of: [0002] Nuclear localized AT-hook motif protein 19 / 20 (AHL19 / 20), [0003] GRP (growth regulatory protein, wherein the GRP polypeptide is a metallothionein 2a (MT2a) polypeptide), an alanine aminotransferase (AAT)-like polypeptide, and [0004] Alanine aminotransferase (AAT) polypeptides. The present invention also relates to plants having increased expression of a nucleic acid sequence encoding said yield-enhancing polypeptide, which plants have enhanced yield-related traits relative to control plants. The invention also provides constructs for use in the methods of the invention. Background technique [0005] A growing world population and dwindling arable land...
