Problems solved by technology

Without sufficient retention of fine solids, they are either lost to the process effluent, or accumulate to high levels in the recirculated white water, potentially leading to precipitate build-up
In addition, insufficient retention adds to the cost of papermaking due to the loss of additives that would otherwise be adsorbed on the fibers to provide paper opacity, strength, or sizing properties

Embodiment

[0057] In order to evaluate the performance of the method of the present invention, a series of drainage tests were performed using the Vacuum Drainage Test (VDT). The test results demonstrate the ability of starch modified with metallosilicates to improve system drainage. The setup is similar to the Buchner funnel test described in various filtration reference books, see eg Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook, 7th Edition, (McGraw-Hill, New York, 1999) pp. 18-78. The VDT consisted of a 300ml magnetic Gelman filter funnel, 250ml graduated cylinder, quick disconnect, dehydrator and vacuum pump with vacuum gauge and calibrator. The VDT test is performed by first setting the vacuum to 10 inches Hg, with the funnel properly placed on the graduated cylinder. Then, 250g of 0.5wt% papermaking raw material was added to the beaker, and then additives (such as starch, alum, flocculant and filter aid) required according to the treatment procedure were added to the raw material under th...

Abstract

A method of modifying starch with metal silicates, and the use of the modified starch in the preparation of cellulosic fiber compositions. The method further relates to cellulosic fiber compositions, such as paper and paperboard, which incorporate the starch modified with metal silicates.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the modification of starch with metallosilicates and the use of said modified starch in the preparation of cellulose fiber compositions. The invention also relates to cellulosic fiber compositions, such as paper and board, to which starch modified with metal silicates is added. Background technique [0002] The manufacture of cellulosic fiber sheets, especially paper and board, comprises the following steps: 1) producing an aqueous slurry of cellulosic fibers, which may also contain inorganic mineral fillers or pigments; 2) depositing said slurry on a moving papermaking wire; and 3) forming a sheet from the solid components of the slurry by filtering the water. [0003] Water is then further removed by pressing and drying the sheet. Organic and inorganic chemicals are often added to the pulp prior to the sheet forming step to make the papermaking process less expensive, faster, and / or to achieve specific properties in...
