Embodiment 1

[0205] Ethyl acetate extract of S. tomentosa (LI / DD-H / 054A / 01): S. tomentosa flower heads (2.2kg) were used as the experimental extract and extracted with ethyl acetate (22L) at reflux temperature for 2 hours . The extract was filtered and the extraction of the spent material was repeated twice with ethyl acetate (2 x 13 L) under the same conditions. The combined extracts were fine filtered and concentrated in a rising film evaporator to obtain a residue (174g). Analysis by high performance liquid chromatography showed that the ethyl acetate extract contained 11% of 7-hydroxy-4,11(13)diketenone-12,6-lactone (7-hydroxyorcinone).
