Embodiment Construction

[0054] The present invention relates to a single-mode optical fiber which has low transmission loss and can be manufactured at low cost without deteriorating transmission characteristics.

[0055] For this purpose, the invention proposes an optical fiber with a pure silica core or a lightly doped silica core so as to limit the attenuation, especially at 1550 nm in the case of germanium doping. The present invention proposes: using CVD to make the fiber core and the depressed inner cladding inside the deposition tube to limit the attenuation, especially the attenuation at 1383nm caused by the OH peak. Add a depressed overcladding around the base pipe that will serve as the ring. This configuration makes it possible to reduce the width of the deposited depressed inner cladding inside the substrate tube and to bring the substrate tube closer to the central core, thereby resulting in lower manufacturing costs. The location and dimensions of this ring are carefully chosen to minim...

Abstract

The invention relates to a single-moe optical fiber and a manufacturing method thereof. The single mode optical fiber comprises from center to periphery: - a core having a radius (a) and an index difference (Dn 1 ) with outer cladding (Dn cl ) comprised between -0.5*10<-3> and 0.5*10<-3 >; - an inner depressed cladding having a radius (r ring1 ) and an index difference (Dn inner ) with outer cladding ; - a ring having an inner radius (r ring1 ) comprised between 21[mu]m and 35[mu]m, an outer radius (r ring2 ) and an index difference (Dn ring ) with the outer cladding comprised between -0.5.10 -3 and 0.5.10 -3 ; - an outer depressed cladding having a radius (r out ) and an index difference (Dn out ) with outer cladding. The fiber has a ratio of the volume of the core over the width of the ring (W ring ) comprised between 0.12[mu]m and 0.2[mu]m and the outer depressed cladding has a volume comprised between 15 [mu]m 2 and 30 [mu]m 2 . A low cost preform with increased capacity can be obtained.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of optical fiber transmission, and more particularly, to single mode optical fiber (SMF). The present invention relates to a single-mode optical fiber with reduced attenuation and a method of manufacturing such an optical fiber with increased capacity. Background technique [0002] For optical fibers, the refractive index profile is usually classified according to the graphical appearance of the function relating the refractive index to the fiber radius. In standard fashion, the distance r relative to the center of the fiber is shown on the x-axis and the difference between this refractive index and the refractive index of the fiber cladding is shown on the y-axis. These curves usually represent the theoretical or set profile of the fiber, however constraints in manufacturing the fiber may result in a slightly different profile. Traditionally, an optical fiber includes an optical fiber core with the function...
