Problems solved by technology

However, due to the actual coefficient of expansion of titanium aluminide and due to the shrinkage that occurs upon cooling, it is not possible to produce complex shaped titanium aluminide castings without cracks in rigid, machined graphite molds

Embodiment Construction

[0051] now refer to figure 1 , the device 10 includes a closed chamber 12 divided into two parts, an upper section 12a and a lower section 12b. This chamber houses a titanium aluminide ingot electrode 11 which can be advanced (by means not shown) towards a water-cooled copper crucible 14 . Chamber 12 is evacuated to a vacuum of approximately 0.1 mm Hg. An arc is generated between the electrodes and the crucible. This gradually melts the alloy of the electrode at substantially the same rate as the electrode is being advanced, so about 1000 kg of melt can be formed in the crucible in about 30 minutes. When it has melted and the temperature has stabilized, the crucible is inverted to pour the melt into a tundish 16 which directs the melt into a central down gate 18 which is in the lower section 12b of the chamber 12 Part of the turntable 20. The stage 20 is mounted on bearings and seals 22 in the base of the chamber 12 and a shaft extends through one wall of the chamber to a ...

Abstract

A method of production of a component having at least one dimension that is more than 200 mm, said method comprising the steps of: a) providing a titanium aluminide melt; b) providing a cold sand casting mould; c) mounting the mould and the melt in a vacuum or inert atmosphere chamber; d) rotating the mould at a distance from a rotation axis to generate an artificial gravity in all parts of the mould of at least 30g; e) pouring the melt along said axis of rotation into a gateway that leads the melt to a radius greater than a maximum radius of any part of the mould, the gateway being arranged to open into the mould in a direction contrary to that of said artificial gravity; f) wherein said pouring is at a speed that fills the mould in less than 5 seconds. The method is useful for the casting of long turbine airfoils used in electricity generation industry or large automotive turbocharger wheels.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to the casting of long and complex products such as turbine airfoils and turbocharger wheels made of titanium aluminide. Background technique [0002] Long products are difficult to cast and to achieve low scrap rates. The same goes for complex components. Here, "complex" means containing re-entrants, so that, due to the rigidity of the mold, the shrinkage of the alloy after solidification puts stress on the material and sometimes to the extent that more than The elastic limit of the alloy is exceeded and the part fractures. In fact, "complicated" is of course not the exact term here, as smaller sized reentrant corners are usually not a problem. For example, shrinkage on small dimensions may fall within the flexibility limit of the casting mold and does not test the elastic limit of the cast product. However, the same geometric concave corners are particularly problematic when zoomed in. Airfoils used in turbines used to gene...
