Problems solved by technology

Conventional alternative drug delivery methods such as intravenous and intramuscular delivery have many disadvantages including: pain and risk of infection from needles; the need to use sterile technique; and the need to maintain IV lines on the patient for extended periods of time needs and associated risks
While other drug delivery routes such as implantable drug delivery pumps have been employed, these routes require semi-permanent implantation of the device and may still have many of the limitations of intravenous delivery

Embodiment Construction

[0121] Embodiments of the invention provide devices, systems, and methods for delivering drugs to various locations in the body. The term "drug" as used herein refers to any form of pharmaceutical preparation, which may include a medicament or other therapeutic agent and one or more pharmaceutical excipients. Many embodiments provide swallowable devices for drug delivery within the gastrointestinal tract. Certain embodiments provide a swallowable device, such as a capsule, for delivering a drug to the wall of the small intestine or other gastrointestinal organ.

[0122] Referring now to Figure 1- Figure 11 , an embodiment of a device 10 for delivering a drug 100 to a delivery site DS in the intestinal tract includes a capsule 20 comprising at least one aperture 26, an expandable member 30, a catheter 30, and one or more tissues containing the drug 100 Penetrating member 40 . The tissue penetrating member 40 may be formed at least in part of the drug 100 and / or include a se...

Abstract

Embodiments of the invention provide swallowable devices, formulations and methods for the delivery of pharmaceutical and other therapeutic agents within the gastrointestinal tract. Some embodiments provide swallowable devices, such as capsules, for delivering agents into the intestinal wall or other lumens of the gastrointestinal tract. The device includes a capsule sized to be swallowed and passed through the intestinal tract. The capsule may include at least one catheter, one or more tissue penetrating members located in the catheter, a delivery member, an actuation mechanism, and a release element. The release element degrades upon exposure to various conditions in the gut to release and actuate the actuation mechanism. Embodiments of the invention are particularly useful for the delivery of pharmaceutical agents that are poorly absorbed, poorly tolerated, and / or degrade in the gastrointestinal tract.
