Embodiment 1

[0063] Example 1 : Pigment Red 122 treated with diazonium salt from compound 1 and p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)

[0064] A. Diazotization of 2-aminotriazole-5-carboxylic acid (ie, compound 1)

[0065]

[0066] 52.5 ml of 1M NaOH solution and 100 ml of water were sequentially added to 6.4 g (50 mmol) of ground compound 1 in a beaker. The mixture was stirred at room temperature until compound 1 was completely dissolved. After adding 25ml of 2M NaNO 2 After solution, the mixture thus obtained was added to 40 ml of 2M H over 30 min using a peristaltic pump. 2 SO 4 , 40g of ice and 125ml of water in a mixture. During this process, the temperature of the mixture was kept below 5°C. After this addition is complete, check for excess nitrite by using starch-KI test paper, if the result is negative, add a few drops of 2M NaNO 2 . The diazonium salt solution (containing the diazonium group (diazonium salt) in an amount of about 50 mmol) was kept on ice and used within 30-60 minu...

Embodiment 2

[0074] Example 2 : Treatment of various pigments with diazonium salt from compound 1

[0075] Following the procedure described in Example 1, four pigments, namely, Pigment Red 122 (PR122), Carbon Black (BP700 grade, manufactured by Cabot Corporation), Pigment Blue 15:4, were treated with the diazonium salt from Compound 1. (PB15:4) and Pigment Yellow 74 (PY74). PR122 has an average particle size M of 300nm v . The results are shown in Table 2 below.

[0076] Table 2

[0077]

[0078] The results showed that the diazonium salt from compound 1 effectively modified PR122, BP700 and PB15:4 by attaching organic groups to their surfaces. Furthermore, PR122 modified with the diazonium salt from compound 1 has a much smaller average particle size than the unmodified pigment.

[0079] The results also showed that the diazonium salt from compound 1 can modify the surface of PY74 by attaching organic groups to it. As shown in "Dispersant chemistry gives up its secrets" by Sha...

Embodiment 3

[0080] Example 3 : Pigment Red 122 treated with diazonium salt from compound 2

[0081] Into a 1 liter three necked round bottom flask with overhead stirrer (Teflon blades) was added 89.2 g of filter cake of Pigment Red 122 (containing 28% (i.e., 25 g) of the pigment) followed by 700 ml of deionized water and 40ml of 2M H 2 SO 4 . After adding 4.2 g (50 mmol) of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (compound 2), the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 45 minutes for homogenization. Then, 25 ml of 2M sodium nitrite solution was added to the mixture over a period of 5 minutes while continuing to stir the mixture. During the addition some foaming was observed. After the nitrite addition was complete, an H-acid spot check was performed and showed a strong positive result. Stirring was continued at room temperature for 3 hours, at which time the H-acid spot test was negative. The pH of the mixture was adjusted to 8 by adding 1M NaOH solution. Then, the mixture was sonicated for ...

Abstract

Modified pigments including an organic group containing a 5-membered heteroaromatic ring, as well as related compositions, articles, and methods, are disclosed.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119 to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 395,649, filed May 14, 2010, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to pigments modified with organic groups containing 5-membered heteroaromatic rings, and related compositions, articles, and methods. Background technique [0004] Ink compositions typically contain water-soluble dyes or pigments. Although some dye-based inks are suitable for their intended purpose, dyes, however, have several disadvantages when they are used in inkjet ink compositions. For example, water soluble dyes may dissolve and run when exposed to moisture or water. The dye image may further be smudged or rubbed off when contacted with a felt pen marker or rubbed or touched by a finger. Dyes also exhibit poor photostability when exposed to visible light, ultravi...
