Embodiment Construction

[0103] The following detailed description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the disclosure or its application and uses. Furthermore, there is no intention to be bound by any theory presented in the preceding background or the following detailed description.

[0104] figure 1 A vehicle or automobile 100 is shown according to an exemplary embodiment. As explained in further detail below, the vehicle 100 is configured to thermally regulate a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) of the vehicle 100 using a temperature limit related to the state of charge of the RESS.

[0105] Vehicle 100 includes a chassis 112 , a body 114 , four wheels 116 and an electronic control system 118 . Body 114 is disposed on chassis 112 and substantially encapsulates the other components of vehicle 100 . The body 114 and the chassis 112 may together form a vehicle frame. Each wheel 116 is rotationally coupled to the chassis 112 near a corresponding corner of the body 114...

Abstract

The present invention relates to the thermal regulation of a rechargeable energy storage system utilizing its state of charge. Methods, systems, and vehicles configured for thermally regulating a vehicle rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) are provided. A thermal regulation system is coupled to the RESS and configured to thermally regulate the RESS. A control system is coupled to the thermal regulation system and configured to estimate a state of charge of the RESS and to provide instructions for the thermal regulation system to thermally regulate the RESS based on the state of charge.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to the field of vehicles, and more particularly to methods and systems for thermal regulation of vehicle rechargeable energy storage systems. Background technique [0002] Certain vehicles, particularly electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles, have rechargeable energy storage systems (RESS), such as batteries. It is generally desirable to keep the temperature of the RESS within certain limits. The RESS temperature may be maintained by continuously monitoring the voltage and current values associated with the RESS and by thermally regulating the RESS when the RESS temperature approaches an upper or lower limit for the RESS temperature. However, this type of RESS regulation may not always be optimal, for example if the remaining lifetime of the RESS is limited. [0003] Accordingly, it would be desirable to provide an improved method for thermally conditioning a vehicle RESS, eg, when the remaining life...
