Problems solved by technology

However, this arrangement is less efficient than the teaching of the present invention due to the need to increase the mass around the entire clutch hub circumference; and, the connection between the clutch hub and the damping ring requires a friction coupling, which also results in unnecessary energy loss

Embodiment Construction

[0023] Referring to the drawings, there are shown different embodiments of a vehicle transmission having a clutch assembly with improved howl reduction capability, like symbols designating like or corresponding parts throughout the views. Significant noise reduction is achieved through the use of a set of mass dampers in the clutch assembly. In one embodiment, for example, the damper is a sprung mass damper coupled to a clutch gear. The mass damper changes the vibration pattern of the clutch gears during engagement, thereby reducing the noise output during shifting. The two slides (also known as receivers or grooves) are separated by 180 degrees on the clutch gear. Both dampers are press fit into the slots to connect the dampers to the clutch gear. This manufacturing method yields the added lubricating advantage that when the mass damper is coupled in the clutch gear, a lubricant seal is formed between one side of the clutch gear and the other side of the clutch gear.

Abstract

A clutch gear (40) is formed, and several mass dampers (30) are coupled to the clutch gear to split the mode of vibration for the clutch gear during engagement. A lubrication dam is formed between the clutch gear and the mass damper. A receptor is formed in the clutch gear to partially fit the mass damper. An independent claim is included for vehicle transmission clutch assembly.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to squeal (or noise) reduction in vehicle transmission clutch assemblies. Background technique [0002] A modern transmission includes a clutch assembly to control the relative rotational speed of the vehicle's wheels relative to the engine rotational speed. These clutch assemblies include rotating members that alternate between engaged and disengaged positions. During clutch engagement, the clutch components may vibrate relative to the main drive shaft. This vibration can result in an annoying noise commonly referred to as "squawk". Many existing transmissions seek to reduce squeal by improving transmission lubrication or using electromechanical shift control (or electronic shifting). However, it would be more effective to increase the mass of one or more clutch assembly components to alter the vibration pattern of the clutch assembly during engagement.
