Embodiment Construction

[0030] Referring now to the schema, image 3 One embodiment of the optical DAS disclosed herein is shown generally at 300 . Embodiment 300 includes HE units 302 (described in more detail below) connected to N RUs 306-1...306-N via N P2P fibers 304-1...304-N. The fiber can be single mode or multimode. Each RU contains a single optical interface 310 and a single RF port 324 ( Figure 3c ) of the REAT320. Advantageously, the REAT provides a much higher optical detection efficiency than known EAM receivers because the DL optical signal is reflected and performs a double pass before it is absorbed into the REAT structure. An exemplary assembly that may be used as a REAT in various embodiments disclosed herein is manufactured by Phoenix House, B55 Ardastral Industrial Park, Matlesham, Ipswich, UK, IP53RE (Phoenix House , B55Adastral Park, Martlesham Heath, Ipswich IP53RE, UK) CIP Technologies (CIP Technologies), manufactured and sold components EAM-R-10-C-7S-FCA10Ghz. Each fibe...

Abstract

The present invention provides an optical distributed antenna system comprising a head-end unit adapted to downlink transmit a modulated optical signal having a wavelength λ0 and N remote units (RUs) and comprising at least one circulator and N unmodulated optical signals with wavelength λN. In some embodiments, the HE unit comprises a single circulator arrangement coupled to a single detector of different optical wavelength carriers, the arrangement preventing beating. In some embodiments, the RU includes a reflective electroabsorption transceiver (REAT) that includes a single optical interface and a single RF port. The REAT detects the optical signal having λ0 and converts it into an RF signal. The REAT also reflects an unmodulated optical signal having one of the wavelengths λN and provides a modulated uplink optical signal based on the RF signal. In some embodiments, the RU is configured as an optical antenna unit. In some embodiments, multiple RUs are combined with passive optical distribution units to provide a hierarchical DAS architecture.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is related to and hereby claims the benefit of priority from US Patent Application Serial No. 13 / 345,723 of the same title, filed January 8, 2012. technical field [0003] Embodiments of the various systems disclosed herein relate generally to combined wireless / optical communication systems, and more specifically to optical distributed antenna systems (DAS). Background technique [0004] Optical distributed antenna systems based on the combined use of radio frequency (RF) and optical signals are known and are used, for example, in fiber optic radio systems. Fig. 1 schematically shows a known optical DAS 100 comprising a number (N) of point-to-point (P2P) optical fibers 104-1...104-N connected to N (N≥1) remote units (RU ) 106-1 . . . 106-N head-end (HE) units 102. Each RU may be connected to a passive DAS comprising a coaxial cable 112 and one or more antennas 114 . Exemplarily, in DAS100, N=8. Th...
