[0019] For illustrative purposes, the invention is described herein primarily in the context of a system implementing a racing game in which an agent under user control is a physical vehicle or accessory that competes on a physical track in connection with game play. . Further details regarding the implementation of such a system and the mechanisms for integrating virtual and physical environments are set forth in related US Utility Model Application Serial No. 13 / 707,512, filed on December 6, 2012, entitled " Distributed System of Autonomously Controlled Mobile Agents" (Attorney Case No. ANK001CONT), which is incorporated herein by reference. However, those skilled in the art will recognize that the techniques described herein can be implemented in other contexts and environments and need not be limited to vehicles on a physical track. Accordingly, the term "vehicle" as used herein should be taken to extend to any mobile agent capable of being controlled and operated in the ...

Abstract

A robotic system is integrated with one or more mobile computing devices. Physical configurations of individual components of the system in physical space, or agents, under control of a user or users, are duplicated in a representation in virtual space. Some degree of real-time parity is maintained between the physical and virtual spaces, so as to implement a virtual environment that mirrors the physical one. Events occurring within one environment can directly influence and bear consequence on the course of events occurring within the other environment. Elements of virtual space thereby become truly interdependent and unified on a peer footing with elements in physical space. In at least one embodiment, the system of the present invention is implemented as an application in entertainment, such as the manifestation of a video game in physical space.

Description

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS [0002] This application claims "Integration of a Robotic System with One or More Mobile Computing Device", filed on August 27, 2012 (Attorney Docket No. ANK002- PROV) of US Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 693,687, which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to robotic systems that can be integrated with mobile computing devices. Background technique [0004] One of the challenges of building robotic systems that are mobile, autonomous, and / or otherwise capable of operating with some level of awareness about their environment is that the cost can be significant. Producing such systems at a cost that can support sales to the consumer market has been a historical barrier to deploying robots for consumer use. While the market opportunity to impart some level of intelligence or AI-based functional capabilities to products is enormous, the cost structure of these products...
