[0025] Embodiments of the present invention provide a linear capacitive encoder that enables incremental displacement measurement in a differential configuration and determines absolute position by digitally encoding conductive grid strips disposed on a single linear emitting line. A voltage signal is supplied to the conductive grid bars on the fixed plate of the encoder and a potential distribution is generated in the reflector of the movable plate by electrostatic induction. Movement of the movable plate results in a change in capacitance, which can be measured by receiver electrodes on the fixed plate to detect displacement of the movable plate relative to the fixed plate. An encoder includes, among other features, a signal generator, a controller, an incremental processing block, and an absolute processing block.

Embodiments of the present invention provide a capacitive linear encoder that can enable incremental displacement measurement with a differential configuration and determine absolute position of a movable plate by digitally encoding pitch bars disposed in a single linear transmitter line on a static plate of the encoder. The encoder further includes a signal generator, a controller, an incremental processing module and an absolute processing module. The encoder can offer both incremental and absolute measurement modes and combine robustness with high measurement resolution.
