Embodiment Construction

[0039] figure 1 A wireless communication system 10 is shown in accordance with one or more embodiments. As shown, system 10 includes a core network (CN) 12 and a radio access network (RAN) 14 . CN 12 communicatively couples RAN 14 with one or more external networks (eg, public switched telephone network (PSTN) 16, packet data network (PDN) 18 (eg, the Internet), etc.). The RAN 14 includes one or more base stations 20 configured to communicate wirelessly with one or more wireless communication devices 22 (eg, user equipment UE, or machine-to-machine devices) (referred to herein simply as "devices"). In at least some embodiments, the RAN 14 also includes one or more radio network controllers (RNCs) 24 . In some embodiments, the RAN 14 includes different types of radio access network deployments, such as macro access point deployments and pico access point deployments, as used herein, both controlled by base stations.

Abstract

A first one of a wireless communication device (22) and a base station (20) performs a method for applying a change to a configuration or state of a radio bearer. The radio bearer supports the transfer of data over a radio connection between the wireless communication device (22) and the base station (20) with defined data transfer characteristics. The method includes performing a handshake with a second one of the wireless communication device (22) and the base station (20) to agree on a time to synchronously apply the change at the wireless communication device (22) and the base station (20). The method also includes, in accordance with the agreement, synchronously applying the change at that time.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application No. 61 / 758,622, filed January 30, 2013, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present application relates generally to radio bearers, and in particular to applying changes to the configuration or status of radio bearers at wireless communication devices and base stations. Background technique [0004] Currently, many wireless communication systems support multiple types of services including, for example, circuit-switched voice services, packet data services, high data rate services, and the like. These different services have significantly different characteristics. Furthermore, different applications using the same general service may impose different requirements on that service. For example, Internet browsing applications may be supported by packet data services with variable latency and throughput,...
