[0016] The present invention generally relates to systems and methods for generating images from a rotating intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) device. The systems and methods of the present invention are particularly useful for rotational IVUS. In a rotating IVUS catheter, a single transducer with a piezoelectric crystal is rotated rapidly (eg, approximately 1800 revolutions per minute) while the transducer is intermittently energized with electrical pulses. The excitation pulse causes the transducer to vibrate, which sends out a series of transmit pulses. Transmit pulses are sent at a frequency that allows time for the echo signal to be received. A sequence of transmitted pulses interspersed with received signals provides the ultrasound data needed to reconstruct a complete cross-sectional image of the vessel.
[0017] The general design and construction of rotary IVUS catheters are shown, for example, in U.S. Patent Nos. 4,794,931, 5,000,185, and 5,313,949 to Yock; U.S. Paten...
