Embodiment Construction

[0029] figure 1 An example of a vaso-occlusive embolic coil delivery system 100 is generally shown, which may include an elongated delivery catheter 2, which may generally include a small flexible tube and may be a flexible tube with two ends. Plastic construction. Catheter 2 may also comprise a braid or coil reinforced composite construction having an inner layer, a reinforcement layer and an outer layer. The construction may include inner and outer layers of soft polyurethane fused around woven polymer monofilaments. Helical or coil reinforcements may be used to increase the hoop strength and kink resistance of the catheter 2 .

[0030] The catheter 2 may have a lumen 4 extending from a proximal end 3 to a distal end 5 . Catheter 2 may have a first inner diameter ID forming lumen 4 . The catheter 2 may also include an engagement member notch 6 formed in at least one side of the catheter 2 . The engagement member recess 6 may form a smaller inner diameter ID2 than the fi...

Abstract

The present invention is directed to an embolic coil delivery system with a retractable mechanical release mechanism. The present invention provides an embolic device deployment system comprising a catheter having a first lumen and proximal and distal ends. A notch is disposed in the first lumen forming a second lumen. The occluding device has a retaining ring at the proximal end. The engagement member includes a distal loop extending through the retaining ring and a proximal loop extending into the first lumen. An elongated detachment member may be disposed through the collars with a detachment member protrusion disposed between the collars. The occluding device is engaged when the detachment member is disposed within the distal loop and the distal loop is disposed within the retaining ring. When the detachment member is pulled proximally, the detachment member is withdrawn from the distal loop and the detachment member bulges into contact with the proximal loop. These actions facilitate disengagement of the distal loop from the retaining ring to release the occluding device.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a medical device for placing an embolic device at a predetermined site within a blood vessel of a human body, and more particularly to a catheter-based deployment system for delivering an embolic device. Background technique [0002] Flexible catheters have been used for many years to place various devices within human blood vessels. Such devices include dilating balloons, radiopaque fluids, liquid drugs, and various types of occlusive devices such as balloons and embolic coils. Examples of such catheter-based devices are disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 5,108,407 entitled "Method and Apparatus for Placement of an Embolic Coil" and U.S. Patent No. 5,108,407 entitled "Endovascular ElectrolyticallyDetachable Guidewire Tip For The Electroformation Of Thrombus In Arteries, Veins, Aneurysms , Vascular Malformations And Arteriovenous Fistulas” US Patent 5,122,136. These patents disclose catheter-based devices for delivering emb...
