Embodiment Construction

[0012] The present disclosure describes methods and systems for planning a radiation therapy treatment using a radiation therapy delivery system in conjunction with any one or more of various imaging system modalities. Such imaging system modalities include, for example, computed tomography (CT) imaging, cone beam CT, other x-ray based imaging, ultrasound imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, and the like. exist figure 1 A typical radiation therapy system 100 is schematically shown in FIG. Accordingly, system 100 includes a radiation source 102 for directing and delivering radiation to a designated target region(s) within a patient positioned on a support 104 . Radiation source 102 may be, for example, an x-ray source, a linear accelerator, or some other suitable source for providing radiation for radiation therapy. Radiation source 102 emits radiation as a beam having a single direction of travel and a cross-sectional area al...

Abstract

A method and system are provided for determining the utility of performing replanning of a patient during radiation therapy planning. They automatically estimate the possible quality improvement by reprogramming a patient without relying on clinician bias, enabling clinicians to make informed decisions about whether to reprogram a patient in a fast and efficient manner. Greater consistency and predictability in adaptive re-planning is thus provided.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application generally relates to a method and system for radiation therapy planning. Radiation therapy is the process by which the delivery of ionizing radiation to a patient is planned and executed by trained medical clinicians. The goal(s) of radiation therapy can vary widely. Very commonly, this treatment is used to treat diseases such as cancer by ionizing and thereby destroying diseased tissue. A central goal of radiation therapy planning is to control radiation delivery to maximize radiation exposure to the target region(s) within the patient's body (ie, diseased tissue) while simultaneously maximizing radiation exposure to the target region(s) within the patient's body. Radiation exposure in protected areas (i.e. healthy tissue) is minimized. Background technique [0002] As commonly practiced, radiation therapy begins with a detailed three-dimensional imaging scan of the patient's body, such as a computed tomography (CT) scan. A...
