Embodiment Construction

[0040] figure 1 A level gauging system 1 is schematically shown comprising a radar level gauge 2 and a host system 3 shown as a control room. Here the radar level gauge 2 is mounted on a tubular mounting structure 4 (commonly called a "nozzle") extending substantially vertically from the top of a tank 5 . The tank 5 can be any container or vessel capable of holding the item to be measured. Usually the nozzle 4 is an existing part on the tank and was not originally intended for a particular type of level gauge. The nozzle 4 may therefore have characteristics which are not ideal for this purpose. The radar level gauge can of course also be installed on tanks without any nozzles.

[0041] A radar level gauge 2 is installed to measure the fill level of the items 6 contained in the tank 5 by detecting the distance to the upper surface 7 of the items 6 . The distance to a lower interface such as the interface between oil and water below the oil can also be detected. The radar ...

Abstract

FMCW-type radar level gauge for determining the distance to the surface of a product in a tank comprising a transceiver to emit an electromagnetic transmit-signal and to receive an electromagnetic return-signal reflected by the surface, the electromagnetic transmit-signal having a bandwidth of at least 1 GHz, a relative bandwidth (max frequency / min frequency) of less than 2.5 and an upper frequency-limit smaller than 4 GHz. The gauge comprises a single conductor probe mechanically suspended and extending into the product in the tank, and a matching arrangement providing an electrically-matched connection between a sealed electrical feed-through and the single conductor probe. The relatively expensive still-pipe of the prior-art is here replaced with a relatively inexpensive single conductor probe acting as a surface wave-guide (SWG).

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a radar level gauge of the FMCW type for determining the distance to the surface of an item in a tank. Background technique [0002] Radar level gauging of tanks containing eg liquids, gases or granular goods has been used for decades and several different technical solutions are in use. For signal generation and signal processing, a method known as FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) has been widely used especially where measurement accuracy is a critical specification point. In most FMCW systems, a transmit signal of substantially equal amplitude and linearly varying frequency is transmitted into the tank and reflected by surfaces. The reflected signal is received and mixed with the transmitted signal to form an intermediate frequency signal, where the intermediate frequency (IF) corresponds to the distance from the transmitter / receiver to the reflection point (usually the surface of the item in the tank). Substituti...
