Abstract

A vehicle bumper energy absorber system includes a foam energy absorber (EA) for lateral mounting in front of a bumper and having a plurality of cavities formed therein. A variable stiffness element is located within the lumen and embedded within the EA. The variable stiffness elements are formed from open-cell foam treated with a magnetorheological fluid. An electromagnetic device is co-located and energized with the corresponding element to generate a magnetic field that acts on the magnetorheological element and thereby increases the stiffness of the element. When energized, the element adds to the overall stiffness of the EA / element system; when the electromagnetic device is not energized, the EA itself has relatively low stiffness to meet pedestrian protection goals. At speeds where pedestrian protection is not required but low speed damage capability objectives are important, the electromagnetic device is energized to stiffen the EA / element system.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to impact energy absorbing systems for motor vehicles, and to systems comprising constant stiffness energy absorbers having variable stiffness elements embedded therein. The variable stiffness element comprises an open-cell foam block treated with a magnetorheological material, and an electromagnetic device is co-located with the foam block to generate a magnetic field to increase the stiffness of the foam block when desired. Background technique [0002] A typical bumper system for a motor vehicle (passenger car, light truck, sport utility vehicle, hybrid utility vehicle, etc.) typically includes a bumper (also commonly known as a bumper beam) and one or more energy absorbing components , the bumper extends transversely relative to the vehicle, and one or more energy absorbing components are mounted in front of the bumper. The bumper is typically made of metal and / or other high strength material, and the energy absorber...
