Abstract

A method for balloon launching may include loading a prepackaged balloon and payload into a housing structure. The prepackaged balloons can be pulled from their packaging in a vertical direction, for example by means of a gantry crane. The gantry crane can be configured to inflate the balloon from the top of the bag. The balloon may be inflated while substantially within the shell structure, which may provide protection from gusts of wind. A vehicle such as a heavy-duty forklift provides mobility and support for the balloon and shell. Optionally, once the balloon is inflated, the vehicle may move the balloon / shell combination at a rate and direction that substantially matches the current wind direction / speed. Additionally, the vehicle may assist and / or initiate opening of the housing after reaching zero speed conditions relative to the wind. The tether connecting the balloon to the housing structure can be disconnected, allowing the balloon to be launched.
