Problems solved by technology

Implementing an analog-only filter is problematic and may not even be feasible because it would require using too large an area on an integrated circuit (IC) chip
At the same time, implementing digital filters (especially digital filters) for NB receivers to produce high performance requires relatively small area on chip and consumes relatively low power, which is a very challenging task

[0031] channel filtering

[0032] Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to digital filters that allow passage of digital values associated with the contribution of a signal detected by a receiver in a desired frequency band (channel) of interest, while eliminating, reducing, or contributing to the received signal in the desired frequency band (channel) of interest. Frequency bands outside the detection mechanism contribute to noise below the threshold. figure 1 An illustration of channel filter functionality according to some embodiments of the present disclosure is provided. Such as figure 1 As shown, the receiver can receive a signal 102 containing contributions in different frequency bands, at figure 1 An example of three adjacent channels 104, 106 and 108 is shown. The received signal 102 may then be provided to a channel filter 110, such as for example a digital filtering module as described herein, which will process the signal 102 to pass the contribution ...

Abstract

The invention provides a small area and low power IIR filter structure. Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a digital filter module for use in receivers, particularly suitable for use in a narrow-band electromagnetic receiver. Design of the module is based on a recognition that providing to the module samples of a signal received by a receiver and sampled at a sampling frequency equal to four times the intermediate frequency of the receiver, eliminating zeros in the filter, and implementing the filter module as a resource-shared second-order filter structure that includes two sections advantageously enables saving some hardware components, particularly some multipliers and adders, in implementing a versatile digital filter module that can function either as two real filters or one complex filter. In this manner, substantial reduction of area and power consumption of the filter module may be achieved, while maintaining sufficiently high filtering performance.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to the field of digital signal processing, in particular to small-area and low-power digital filters. Background technique [0002] As is well known, an electromagnetic receiver is an electronic device that receives electromagnetic waves within a certain range of frequencies and converts the information carried by these waves into some usable form. For example, receivers, commonly referred to as "radio receivers," receive radio-range electromagnetic waves from about 3 kilohertz (kHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). All receivers use antennas to capture electromagnetic waves and convert them to alternating current (AC) signals, and electronic filters separate signals of the desired frequency band from all other signals captured by the antennas. In the case of a receiver, the different bands of frequencies are sometimes called "channels". [0003] The selectivity performance of a receiver refers to a measure of the receiver's ability to s...
