The method comprises the following steps of collecting and calibrating an instrument template, and storing a template drawing, maximum and minimum ranges and units of an instrument in the template drawing, and a current position reading of a pointer of the template instrument in a template library; searching for maximum and minimum scale lines and a pointer straight line of the instrument in the template drawing, and storing an angle of the maximum and minimum scale lines and a circle center position of the instrument in the template library; performing template matching, and correcting a to-be-identified instrument drawing to a positive view angle drawing; and searching for a pointer straight line in the to-be-identified instrument drawing by adopting a pointer search method, and calculating an instrument reading. According to the method, the template calibration method is adopted, the establishment of the template library in the early stage is simple, only the angle of the maximum and minimum scale lines needs to be searched for once, the circle center position is determined and stored in the template library, and only the angle of the pointer of each to-be-identified instrument needs to be identified in the later stage, so that the information amount of computer identification is reduced and the reliability is high.
