Abstract

The present disclosure provides an apparatus and method for purifying exhaust gas. The device for purifying exhaust gas may include: an exhaust pipe connected to an exhaust manifold of an engine; a catalytic converter installed on the exhaust pipe and including a hydrocarbon trap and a three-way catalyst; exhaust gas recirculation (EGR ) pipe, which connects the exhaust pipe downstream of the catalytic converter to the intake manifold of the engine; the EGR valve, which is installed on the EGR pipe; the first oxygen sensor, which is installed on the exhaust pipe downstream of the catalytic converter; the second a oxygen sensor, installed on the exhaust pipe upstream of the catalytic converter; and a controller, which controls the operation of the EGR valve.
