Problems solved by technology

[0004] However, DART TM The network is still sparse, making it impossible to observe the full tsunami and feed it into the model before it hits the coast
Further, because bathymetry (i.e., depth of offshore water) varies widely in different coastal regions, model predictions of timing and intensity at coastal locations are usually only very rough

Abstract

The invention relates to systems used for tsunami detection and warning. Systems and techniques are described for tsunami detection and warning using coastal radar systems designed primarily for the real-time mapping of ocean surface currents. These radar systems are configured to detect an approaching tsunami in the system's ''near field'', i.e., the near-shore region over which the radar system observes the sea surface.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a system for tsunami detection and early warning. Background technique [0002] Typically, tsunamis are generated by sudden physical displacements of the Earth's surface (for example, submarine earthquakes or landslides) or atmospheric anomalies (for example, the latter are known as meteorological tsunamis). Therefore, the first possible sign of a tsunami may be the seismic detection of an earthquake. However, not all undersea earthquakes generate tsunamis, and therefore, the magnitude of an earthquake cannot be used to predict the generation or intensity of a resulting tsunami. [0003] One type of sensor that looks at and measures the strength of a tsunami is a bottom pressure sensor connected to a buoy above. The network of these sensors developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Assess and report on DART TM ). DART TM The sensors observe the height of the tsunami as it passes over it. The tsunami heights measu...
