Embodiment Construction

[0032] figure 1 A trailing suction dredger ("TSHD") 10 is shown during a dredging operation. The trailing suction dredger 10 sucks a mixture of water and solid particles through a suction pipe 12 . The mixture was then conveyed to a hopper (not shown) in THSD 10. The excess liquid in the hopper overflows, and the plume 14 forms due to the mixing of the air with the overflow, the vertical orientation of the overflow, and the velocity and total flow that causes the overflow water to mix with the air.

[0033] Plume 14 can have adverse effects on native marine biotopes because it reduces the amount of light entering the body of water. In addition, in some cases, settled particles kill bottom life, and the suspension can reduce the ability of microorganisms to thrive. Air bubbles in the flow also cause resistance in the overflow, reducing the effective delivery capacity of the overflow. Creating an adjustable overflow to control flow into and through the overflow head can help...

Abstract

An overflow system (20) for a hopper dredger (10) includes an overflow tube (22); and a plurality of canals (26a-26e) adjacent and substantially parallel to the overflow tube (22). The plurality of canals (26a-26e) have inlets (28a-28e) at different heights for taking in head water from the hopper (18). The plurality of canals (26a-26e) fluidly connect to the overflow tube (22) at a point downstream from the inlets (28a-28e).

Description

Background technique [0001] Trailing suction dredgers ("TSHD") are vessels that can be used for dredging at sea or in open water. TSHD typically uses a suction tube, one end of which can be lowered to the seabed, and used to suck up solids such as sand, sludge, silt or sediment mixed with water. The lower end of the suction pipe may be provided with a suction head or a drag head. The solid material mixed with water is pumped through the suction pipe into the hopper of the dredger. While in the dredger, the velocity of the mixture is reduced, and this velocity reduction allows components suspended in the mixture to settle. The excess water then overflows from the hopper through overflow to allow more load capacity within the TSHD. [0002] Water from the hopper flows into the overflow through the entry pan or directly from the top into the overflow. This overflow volume is then released below the water surface outside the dredger. Due to the generally vertical flow orienta...
