It is to be understood, however, that no limitation of the scope of the invention is thereby intended, and such alterations and further modifications in the described methods and apparatuses are contemplated, now or in the future, to those skilled in the art to which this invention pertains. This further application of the principles of the invention described herein.

[0059] figure 1 A common normalized QPSK constellation in the complex plane is shown. The constellation diagram includes a first pair of symbols at (-1,-i) and (1,i); and a second pair of symbols (-1,i) and (1,-i). Therefore, each symbol can be represented by the complex number Z symbol =X o +i·Y o said, of which

Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method of encoding and / or decoding data for optical data transmission along a transmission link, as well as corresponding transmitters and receivers. The data is encoded based onan adaptive constellation diagram in a 2-D plane, said constellation diagram including a first and a second pair of symbols, wherein the symbols of the first pair of symbols are located at opposite sides of the origin of the 2-D plane at a first distance di from each other, and wherein the symbols of the second pair of symbols are located at opposite sides of the origin of the 2-D plane at a second distance d2 from each other. The method comprises a step of adapting the constellation diagram by varying the ratio of the first and second distances d1, d2 such as to minimize or nearly minimize abit error rate in the transmitted data.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention belongs to the field of optical data transmission. More particularly, the present invention relates to a new method of encoding and / or decoding data for optical data transmission along a transmission link using adaptive constellations, and to transmitters and receivers using the method. Background technique [0002] Distributed Raman amplification is a popular technique for improving fiber link performance. Raman amplification is based on the phenomenon of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), according to which low-frequency "signal" photons cause inelastic scattering of high-frequency "pump" photons in an optical medium in a nonlinear state. Due to this inelastic scattering, another "signal" photon is produced, and the remaining energy is transferred resonantly to the vibrational state of the medium. Therefore, this process allows for plenoptic amplification. [0003] Co-directional Raman amplification is an attractive technique for imp...
