Embodiment Construction

[0075] Railway tracks, also known as permanent ways, usually consist of rails, fasteners, sleepers (crossties), ballast, and the underlying roadbed. Several assets on or adjacent to the track are important for signaling and running trains on the track. These include assets related to civil engineering, electrification, signaling, wayside monitoring, driver assistance and guidance, and the track components themselves.

[0076] Figure 1-Figure 4 An example of a closed system 10 for surveying railroad assets, referred to herein as "TrackVue", is shown. The examples described below refer to a single unit or module in which all the equipment required for the operation of an asset survey system is placed. This single containment unit is well suited for retrofitting existing passenger or freight trains and represents an embodiment of the present invention which is advantageously facilitated in a number of ways for installation and operation. However, other examples of the inventi...

Abstract

The present invention relates to automatic detection and measurement of railway track assets for use in their condition assessment and estimation of risks to tracks, trains and personnel. The system uses forward-facing, upward-facing, downward-facing or side-facing 2D and 3D imaging sensors for automated asset detection, asset condition estimation, vegetation management, gap measurement, overheadline and tunnel checks, and more. Raw data is presented to a processor that performs real-time identification and evaluation of orbital assets by using a combination of sensor data. Asset condition and rail risk assessment data may be presented to the onboard operator or sent to a remote location using wireless transmission.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates to surveying of railway track assets, such as objects or equipment in the vicinity of a railway. [0002] Assets near railway tracks are important to the signaling and operation of trains on the tracks. These include assets related to signaling, trackside monitoring, driver assistance and guidance, and track components. [0003] Typically, when managing railroad track assets, a well-known list of assets is maintained, including the location of said assets. These usually include information on important assets such as signals, but may not include information on smaller or less important assets. Asset lists are often manually maintained at high cost. This is very time consuming and the list becomes out of date very quickly. [0004] Previously, track surveys were done by a team of inspectors who would walk along the track or drive on a low-speed motorized platform, making it possible to document track component...
