Embodiment Construction

[0050] Some wireless communication systems may operate in the millimeter wave (mmW) frequency range (eg, 28GHz, 40GHz, 60GHz, etc.). In some cases, wireless communications at these frequencies may be associated with increased signal attenuation (eg, path loss), which may be affected by various factors, eg, temperature, air pressure, diffraction, and the like. Thus, signal processing techniques such as beamforming (ie, directional transmission) can be used to coherently combine signal energy and overcome path loss in a particular beam direction. In some cases, a device may select a beam direction (eg, a beam identification (ID)) for communicating with the network by selecting the strongest beam from among multiple reference signals sent by a base station. However, the strongest beam may be associated with an access period that causes a significant delay before an access message can be sent. This may result in delays in accessing the network, or increased disruption in re-estab...

Abstract

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A piece of user equipment (UE) may identify a number of beam directions that satisfy a transmission power condition. The UE mayselect a beam direction for a random access signal by choosing one of the beam directions that satisfies additional criteria, such as transmitting a random access message at the next opportunity. Thetransmission power may be selected based on a target receive power and a path loss for the selected beam. In some cases, if the sum of the path loss for a beam direction and the target receive power exceeds a maximum transmission power by more than a predetermined amount, the random access signal will not be transmitted using that beam. In some cases, if a response to the random access is not received, a different beam direction may be selected and the transmission power may be increased, or both.

Description

[0001] cross reference [0002] This patent application claims priority to: U.S. Patent Application No. 15 / 371,978, filed December 7, 2016, by Islam et al., entitled "Beam and Symbol Selection to Transmit RACH"; U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 343,116, filed May 30, 2016, entitled "Beam and Symbol Selection to TransmitRACH"; and Islam et al., filed May 16, 2016, entitled "Beam and Symbol Selection to Transmit RACH”; each of these applications is assigned to the assignee of the present application. technical field [0003] The following relates generally to wireless communications and, more specifically, to beam and symbol selection for transmitting a Random Access Channel (RACH). Background technique [0004] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, and so on. These systems are capable of supporting communication with multiple users by sharing ava...
