Embodiment Construction

[0023] References to certain features of the invention involve certain conventions in notation. For example, in particular embodiments, the expression X(i) or Xi would be used equivalently to indicate that X is a function of i. Additionally, a capital "A" will be used to designate Alice, a capital "B" will be used to designate Bob, and a capital "E" will be used to designate Eve.

[0024] An example of a scheme for sharing a phase reference in practical CV-QKD according to an embodiment of the present invention is now described and discussed.

[0025] To facilitate understanding of certain embodiments, nomenclature for a general classification of local oscillator (LO) strength generation techniques is first described.

[0026] Different general types of CV-QKD can be distinguished based on their LO strength generation methods, including Transmit LO (TLO) and Local LO (LLO).

[0027] Regarding transmitted LO (TLO), the intensity of the LO is generated by Alice's laser and tra...

Abstract

There are disclosed systems and associated methods of performing coherent optical communication of quantum information between an emitter A and a distant receiver B, using a local local oscillator (LLO). Examples of LLO-based Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution (CV-QKD) are described. Self-coherent schemes are used, said schemes consisting in deriving both signal and phase reference pulses from the same optical pulse thus ensuring an intrinsic strong signal to reference phase coherence. Different CV-QKD designs implementing various self-coherence phase sharing schemes are described and compared in terms of secret key rate and hardware requirements. Strong phase noise resilience can be obtained with standard telecom equipment such as low cost lasers.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of quantum cryptography, and in particular to continuously variable quantum cryptography. Background technique [0002] Recently, D.B.S.Soh, C.Brif, P.J.Coles, N.Lütkenhaus, R.M.Camacho, J.Urayama, and M.Sarovar (arXiv:1503.04763, 2015) presented a paper entitled "Self-referential continuous variable quantum key distribution (Self- Referenced Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution)" document has introduced a new continuously variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) protocol, namely self-referencing CV-QKD. This continuously variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) protocol eliminates the need to transmit high-power local oscillators between communicating parties. In this protocol, each signal pulse is accompanied by a reference pulse (or a pair of dual reference pulses) that is used to align Alice's and Bob's measurement bases. This protocol provides a method for phase estimation and comp...
