[0014] figure 1 The television receiver shown comprises an input 1 for receiving a plurality of television signals, for example from a satellite or cable distribution network in earth orbit, and an input selection unit 3 for selecting from among the plurality of received television signals A video and audio signal is obtained from a selected television signal, a signal processing unit 5 for processing the audio and video signal, and video and audio output terminals 7 and 9, where the processed video and audio signal is provided. The processed video and audio signals provided at a respective one of the outputs 7 and 9 are coupled to a respective one of the display 11 and the sound reproduction unit 13 . figure 1 The television receiver shown may be a "television apparatus" in which the display 11 and the sound reproduction unit 13 are integrally included. The display 11 and sound reproduction unit 13 may also be included in a supplementary external "television set". In the la...

Abstract

A modem (33) is included in the television receiver for transmitting data, such as "pay-per-view" billing information, to the modem (37) at the billing station during periodic call-back operations. The television receiver modem (33) monitors the telephone line (35) for predetermined conditions, such as the presence of high frequency energy or a drop in loop current in the telephone line, indicating that the telephone is in use. When a predetermined condition is detected, the television receiver modem (33) usually prevents or stops a callback to avoid interfering with normal telephone calls. However, the detection of the predetermined condition may be caused by a problem with the telephone network rather than normal telephone usage. Thus, after a predetermined number of unsuccessful callbacks due to the detection of the condition, the modem (33) is controlled to ignore the detection of the condition until a successful callback is achieved.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to the field of modems, and in particular modems that require an automatic call back to a control station for billing and other information. Background technique [0002] Various products currently include or involve modems connected to the telephone system for the automatic transfer of data, such as billing information, back to the control station. Users of television receivers, for example, are often charged a fee for receiving and processing television signals provided via cable distribution networks or satellites in earth orbit. There are basic connectivity fees for access to services and certain information groups and "pay-per-view" access to special event programming, such as movies and sporting events. "Pay-per-view" billing information is accumulated and stored in the television receiver on a per-use basis and automatically sent ("loaded") via a modem to a billing center. To do this, the modem ...
