Embodiment 1

[0071] Preparation of modified cured rubber layer

[0072] The following components were mixed in the proportions given in Table 1 and mixed at room temperature for a sufficient period of time to obtain an uncured rubber compound.

[0073] Table 1: Uncured Rubber Compositions

[0074]

[0075]The uncured rubber compound was then divided into 4 batches. A 1:0.3 molar ratio of butyl carbamate:formaldehyde mixture was then added to 3 of the 4 batches of uncured rubber compound in amounts of 2phr, 5phr and 10phr respectively, the last batch of uncured rubber compound containing no Butyl carbamate: formaldehyde mixture. Each batch was individually cured at 145°C for 33 minutes at 100 psi. The resulting cured rubber compound was then prepared for adhesion by polishing the bonding surface. Surface polishing with a handheld orbital sander is continued for a sufficient period of time until the surface is visibly altered by sanding. The bonding surface of the polyurethane subs...

Abstract

The present invention discloses a composite of a rubber layer and a polyurethane substrate that adheres together without the need for a separate adhesive layer. The adhesion promoting composition incorporated into the rubber layer provides a means for adhering the rubber layer to the polyurethane substrate. Adhered layered compositions are useful in many applications, including tire construction.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to methods for adhering rubber compositions to polyurethanes to form rubber-polyurethane composites, and more particularly, to rubber compositions containing urethane resins adhered to polyurethane substrates. Background technique [0002] It is known to be difficult to achieve high bond strength when adhering dissimilar materials such as vulcanized rubber and polyurethane. For example, the intermolecular interaction of the polar nature of the polyurethane surface and the non-polar nature of the cured olefin rubber surface is unfavorable at the interface of two different surfaces. Various methods have been developed so far to improve the adhesion of polyurethane to cured olefin rubber. However, these methods generally rely on the separate application of an adhesive composition, which may comprise multiple components, to at least one of the surfaces being adhered together and thereby form an adhesive layer. These adhesiv...
