Problems solved by technology

However, using a content delivery network (CDN), allows clients to access content more quickly because edge servers are distributed across geographic regions, but at the expense of the provider's ability to control and update the content, since the content needs to be distributed across the CDN, and therefore may not include access control
Developers and providers of content are forced to choose between one delivery method or another, and changing delivery methods is often cumbersome, time-consuming, and resource-intensive

Abstract

The present disclosure provides improved computational efficiency in a system for providing content over a network. Hybrid content origination is permitted to provide content via a content distribution system (CDN) and a centralized service in conjunction with each other through a single URL provided to a client device. The client device is provided with an expiration token that is used to authorize the CDN to request and serve content to the client device in a manner that has the security inherent to a centralized service. Thus, tenants are able to use the CDN as an available source by providing clients with a single Uniform Resource Locator with higher security than the public CDN.

Description

Background technique [0001] Choosing a method for distributing content over the Internet often involves a trade-off between speed of delivery and level of control over the content. Using a central distribution point (such as a central cloud service) allows content providers greater control over which clients access content and a higher ability to update content, but clients need to be authenticated, and the central service may be located remotely from the client - This slows down delivery. However, using a content delivery network (CDN), allows clients to access content more quickly because edge servers are distributed across geographic regions, but at the expense of the provider's ability to control and update the content, since the content needs to be distributed across the CDN, and Therefore access control may not be included. Developers and providers of content are forced to choose between one delivery method or another, and changing delivery methods is often cumbersome,...
