Problems solved by technology

Switching cycle However, one disadvantage of charge pumps is that when switching between the multiplication ratios of the charge pump, the average voltage on one or more of the capacitors in one mode of operation may not be equal to that used for another multiplication ratio The average voltage required by the capacitor
On the other hand, if the average voltage on one or more of the capacitors is lower than the previous operation's multiplication ratio, the charge pump may need to sink a large current into its power supply
Due to the capacitor sizes commonly used in charge pumps, when switching between multiplication ratios, the amount of current that the charge pump can draw or sink may not be supplied to or drawn from the charge pump by the power supply, which may result in system damage

Abstract

A method of increasing a multiplication ratio of a charge pump, the multiplication ratio defining a relationship between an output voltage of the charge pump and an input voltage of the charge pump, comprising: analyzing a first efficiency of the charge pump when the multiplication ratio is at a first ratio, calculating a second efficiency of the charge pump when the multiplication ratio is a second ratio lesser than the first ratio, and based on the first efficiency and the second efficiency, determining at least one of a target output power and a target output voltage at which to change themultiplication ratio from the second ratio to the first ratio.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This disclosure claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 416,971, filed November 3, 2016, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates generally to charge pump power supplies, including but not limited to personal audio devices such as wireless phones and media players, and more particularly, to systems and methods for limiting input current delivered to charge pumps. Background technique [0004] Personal audio devices are widely used and include wireless telephones such as mobile / cellular phones, cordless phones, mp3 players and other consumer audio devices. Such personal audio equipment may include circuitry for driving a pair of headphones or one or more speakers. Such circuits typically include a power amplifier for driving the audio output signal to headphones or speakers, and this power amplifier can often be the p...
