Embodiment Construction

[0015] Embodiments of the invention relate to image sensors. It will be understood by those skilled in the art that the exemplary embodiments of the invention may be practiced without some or all of these specific details. In other instances, well known operations have not been described in detail in order to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the embodiments of the invention.

[0016] Electronic devices, such as digital cameras, computers, mobile phones, and other electronic devices may include image sensors that collect incident light to capture images. An image sensor may include an array of pixels. Pixels in an image sensor may include light sensitive elements, such as photodiodes, that convert incident light into image signals. An image sensor can have any number (eg, hundreds or thousands or more) of pixels. A typical image sensor may, for example, have hundreds of thousands or millions of pixels (eg, megapixels). An image sensor may include control circuitry, such as cir...

Abstract

The present disclosure provides an image sensor, which may include a pixel array. Each pixel can have one or more photosensitive regions. Incident light may pass through the microlenses and color filter elements to reach the one or more photosensitive regions. In some pixels, the microlenses may be offset relative to the photosensitive area to account for the chief ray angle of the incident light. In some cases, the microlens can be an annular microlens having an opening. The opening may be offset relative to the center of the microlens based on the wavelength of light transmitted by the color filter element for the pixel. The greater the wavelength of light transmitted by the color filter element for a given pixel, the more the openings of the microlenses may be offset towards the center of the pixel array.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to imaging devices, and more particularly, to an image sensor having imaging pixels with microlenses. Background technique [0002] Image sensors are often used in electronic devices such as mobile phones, cameras, and computers to capture images. In a typical arrangement, an electronic device is provided with an array of image pixels arranged in rows and columns of pixels. Each image pixel in the array includes a photodiode coupled to a floating diffusion region via a transfer gate. Column circuitry is coupled to each pixel column for readout of pixel signals from the image pixels. [0003] In a conventional image sensor, each pixel may include a corresponding microlens to focus light onto the pixel's photodiode. Microlenses in image sensors can sometimes be offset to account for the angle at which incoming light is incident. However, the microlens position of conventional image sensors does not take into ac...
