Embodiment Construction

[0042] refer to figure 1 , a car 1 is provided with four wheels 2 . The car features friction and regenerative braking systems.

[0043] The friction braking system comprises a respective disc brake 3 associated with each wheel 2 . Each disc brake comprises a hydraulically operated caliper connected to a master cylinder 10 by a brake pipe 4 .

[0044] The regenerative braking system comprises an electric motor 5 drivingly connected by a shaft 6 to the rear wheels of the vehicle. The electric motor 5 is connected to the battery 7 through a regenerative braking controller 8 . The regenerative braking controller runs the electric motor as a motor. When the driver requests braking force, the generator absorbs rotational energy from the rear wheels of the car and generates electricity, which is fed and stored into the battery 7 . The regenerative braking controller 8 is connected to wheel (or axle) sensors 12 which measure the rate of rotation of the wheels in order to determi...

Abstract

A regenerative braking system for a vehicle includes a means 13 for storing details of one or more deceleration profiles for the vehicle; means for comparing 13, arranged to compare a current brakingmanoeuvre with the or a selected stored deceleration profile which generates an output signal, during the manoeuvre, representative of any deviation of the deceleration profile of the current brakingmanoeuvre from the ideal deceleration profile with which it is compared. This output can be used to drive a display 14 to provide feedback to a driver as to the efficiency of a braking manoeuvre. Multiple ideal deceleration profiles may be stored and the system arranged to compare a current braking manoeuvre with the most relevant stored profile. Profiles may be stored in association with spatial, temporal and / or environmental information.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a braking system for a vehicle, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to a regenerative braking system for a vehicle, such as an automobile. Background technique [0002] Automobiles with electric propulsion systems, such as those with hybrid drive systems including an internal combustion engine, electric traction motors, and electric batteries, as well as pure electric vehicles, typically deploy regenerative braking in order to recover and store the vehicle's kinetic energy used to propel the vehicle. This is accomplished by using the reverse electric traction motor as a generator to convert rotational kinetic energy from the vehicle's wheels into electrical energy stored in the vehicle's on-board battery. [0003] Due to the capacity of typical electric traction engines and other characteristics of electric traction systems, these regenerative braking systems cannot absorb energy as rapidly as conventional frict...
