Problems solved by technology

Such forming and wrapping of fabric graphic layers can be cumbersome, labor and equipment intensive, and time consuming
Also, depending on the orientation of the fibers, the tear pattern of the fiber-reinforced balloon upon rupture (sometimes referred to as its "tear" or "tear-stop" properties) can lead to increased difficulty in removing the balloon through the shaft

Embodiment Construction

[0035] In general, refer to figure 1 , a fiber-reinforced medical balloon 10 is described herein, which may be a low-compliance, high-pressure medical balloon or a "non-compliant" balloon, the low-compliance, high-pressure medical balloon or "Non-compliant" balloons usually maintain a fixed external shape and size once inflated (note the Figure 1A and 1B Inner compartment I) for receiving and containing inflation fluid, regardless of the additional internal pressure applied. The balloon 10 may be formed by applying substantially inelastic fibers 12 to the outer surface of the base balloon 11 (so as to form the balloon wall W) which surrounds and forms the compartment I . The balloon 10 may include multiple passes (e.g., first, second and third, etc.) of individual fiber strands 12a...12n within a generally cylindrical central portion 10a ("barrel") and longitudinally aligned with each other. Axis X extends substantially parallel to first and second tapered portions 10b, 10...

Abstract

A fiber-reinforced device, such as an inflatable medical balloon, includes a cylindrical central portion. The balloon includes first and second tapered portions connected to the cylindrical central portion along a longitudinal axis extending from a first end of the balloon to a second end of the balloon. In one embodiment, the balloon includes at least one zone free of fibers extending in a longitudinal direction, such that each longitudinal fiber is discontinuous in a circumferential direction around the balloon. In another embodiment, the balloon includes alternating discontinuous and continuous longitudinal fibers. In yet another embodiment, the balloon includes discontinuous longitudinal fibers, with every other longitudinal fiber having a discontinuity aligned in a circumferential direction. Related methods are also disclosed.

Description

[0001] References [0002] All publications and patent applications mentioned in this specification are likewise incorporated herein by reference as if each individual publication or patent application were specifically and individually indicated to be referenced. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to devices for providing endovascular therapy, and more particularly to an inflatable medical balloon having a point of inflection created by the presence of interrupted fibers. Background technique [0004] Fiber-based and expandable devices such as balloons are widely used in medical procedures. In the case of a balloon, it is usually inserted over the end of the catheter until the balloon reaches the target area. Adding pressure to the balloon will inflate the balloon. In one variation of use, the balloon creates a space inside the body when the balloon is inflated. [0005] Balloons can be used in heart valves, including in balloon aortic valvuloplasty (...
