[0010] PLC generally refers to data communication over wires that are also used to carry alternating current (AC) power, such as power lines that deliver power at about 110VAC, 60Hz or about 220VAC, 50Hz. PLC communication can be done on power lines that distribute power in step-down voltages to residential buildings or within buildings such as office buildings. In some cases, PLC will not propagate across distribution transformers such as step-down transformers without some form of signal processing to bridge the two sides or windings of the main transformer. PLC technologies include Powerline Smart Metering Development (PRIME), G3, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1901.2. RF communication generally refers to data communication on radio waves in the 3kHz to 300GHz frequency range. RF technologies include Zigbee, Wi-Fi's WLAN, and Bluetooth (Bluetooth).

Abstract

The invention relates to a dynamic improvement of link symmetry in co-located PLC and RF networks. An electronic communication device (202,204) comprises a first transceiver (206, 210) capable of a bi-directional communication session on a first communication medium (214); a second transceiver (208, 212) capable of a bi-directional communication session on a second communication medium (216); anda control logic (218, 210) coupled to the first transceiver and the second transceiver and capable of implementing a convergence layer, wherein the control logic is configured to receive, from the first transceiver, a first signal; and to cause, in response to the first signal, data received and transmitted as part of a communication session by the first transceiver (206, 210) on the first communication medium (214) instead to be received and transmitted by the second transceiver (208, 212) on the second communication medium (216).
