Problems solved by technology

The complex signal processing described above can be time-consuming, leading to delays in the reporting of monitoring results, such processing taking, for example, several seconds to complete
In addition, the fatty layer of vernix surrounding the fetal patient can block or impede the biopotential from the fetal heart, making it impossible to reliably obtain a fetal ECG
Finally, while biopotential-based determinations of uterine activity are available, the relative strength of contractions and important parameters for assessing the progress of labor cannot be obtained from biopotentials

Embodiment Construction

[0019] figure 1 An exemplary embodiment of a transducer 10 is shown, as described in further detail herein, for simultaneous monitoring of the health of a maternal patient and a fetal patient. figure 2 is an environmental view of an exemplary embodiment of a maternal and fetal monitoring system 12 including the use of transducers 10 . The maternal and fetal monitoring system 12 may be used to simultaneously monitor the heart rate of the maternal patient 14 and the fetal patient within the maternal patient's room.

[0020] The transducer 10 is secured to the abdomen 16 of a maternal patient 14 , for example, by means of an elastic band 18 . However, it should be understood that in other embodiments, the transducer 10 may be secured to the patient's abdomen 16 using a biocompatible adhesive.

[0021] In an embodiment to be described in further detail herein, transducer 10 is communicatively connectable to monitoring device 20 via communication connection 22 . As will be appr...

Abstract

The invention provides a system and method for monitoring a mother and a fetus. The system and method includes acquiring ultrasonic physiological data with an ultrasonic transducer. A plurality of electrodes acquire biopotential physiological data from the skin of a patient. The controller receives the ultrasound physiological data and the biopotential physiological data and calculates a fetal heart rate (fHR) value, a mother heart rate (mHR) value, and a uterine activity (UA) value using the ultrasound physiological data and the biopotential physiological data.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure relates to maternal and fetal monitoring. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to an apparatus and method for monitoring maternal and fetal heart rate. [0002] Before the onset of labor, pregnant patients like to move around. In other words, pregnant patients like to be able to move freely, whether in the patient's own home or within the hospital. However, a pregnant patient, who may soon be in labor, is less ambulatory due to the number of sensors typically attached to her abdomen to monitor both the onset of labor and the health of the unborn baby. [0003] The mother's heart rate can be obtained from the return ultrasound signal received by the ultrasound transducer. In essence, maternal heart rate can appear as an artifact of fetal heart rate determination. Uterine activity also appears as an artifact of the received ultrasound signal from the ultrasound transducer. [0004] The two most common transduce...
