Problems solved by technology

[0009] The disadvantage of inductive sensing is that it can be power intensive to operate due to the need to continuously drive the resonator circuit with an oscillating drive signal
This limits the potential applications of the technology
For example, it is difficult to apply inductive sensing in portable or wireless form factors because the battery drain is usually too fast to allow the application over a relatively short period of time

Abstract

An inductive sensing system (8) has a resonator circuit (10) with an antenna (12) for simultaneously applying an electromagnetic signal to a body and sensing a secondary electromagnetic signal returning from the body. The system includes a signal sensing unit (30) configured to detect a measure representative of an imaginary part of an additional inductive component added to the resonator circuit by the secondary electromagnetic signal, but which does not measure a real part. In particular, the signal sensing unit may be configured to detect a measure indicative of damping in the resonator circuit (e.g., a damping factor), and does not include any unit for detecting any measure indicative of a natural frequency change of the resonator circuit.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to inductive sensing systems and methods, particularly for sensing electromagnetic signals emitted from the body in response to electromagnetic excitation signals applied to the body. Background technique [0002] Inductive sensing can be used as a means of non-invasive investigation of bodily properties. [0003] In an advantageous field of application, inductive sensing can be used as a means of non-invasively studying physiological properties, especially cardiopulmonary dynamics. For example, it can be used to measure respiratory rate, depth of breath and pulse rate. It can more broadly measure the mechanical movement and dynamic changes of internal body structures such as the heart, lungs or arteries. For example, it can be used to sense periodically changing internal volumes or dimensions of mechanical activity of chambers or arteries of the heart or lungs, such as arterial volumes that change during a cardiac cycle...
