Abstract

An automotive alternator including a circuit to detect the start of engine rotation. Once the start of rotation is detected, field current is supplied to the field winding and thereafter the output of the alternator is controlled by controlling the field current. A resistor is connected to one phase winding of the armature to obtain a voltage indicating the start of rotation during periods when no field current is supplied to the field winding, and a capacitor is connected to the other phase winding to increase the indicated voltage level. Since the indication voltage induced by a small amount of residual magnetism can be raised to a sufficient level by the capacitor, the start of rotation can be accurately detected.
