Embodiment Construction

[0019] The crystalline zeolite materials described herein are suitable for adsorbing argon from a mixture comprising argon and oxygen. While many crystalline zeolitic materials are effective for separating argon from oxygen, they are not effective for separating argon from oxygen by adsorption techniques. The crystalline zeolite adsorbent described here and suitable for the separation of argon from oxygen consists of a silver-exchanged lithium-X zeolite with Li x Ag y m z The ion exchange subcomponent in the form of X, where 0.85≤x+y≤1, 0.2≤y≤0.7, 0.0≤z≤0.15, M represents one or more cations, and x, y, and z represent the total The number of copies that can be swapped. M may be one or more elements in cationic form selected from the group consisting of: alkali or alkaline earth metals, rare earths, transition metals, or Group IIIA metals. Preferably, M is one or more elements in the form of cations selected from Na, K, Cs, Mg, La, Ce, Ca, Al, or Zn. Preferably, the sorben...

Abstract

An AgX-type zeolite having a silver exchange level of 20-70% and a Ar / O2 Henry's law selectivity ratio at 23° C. of 1.05 or greater has an optimum combination of selectivity for argon over oxygen at lower cost than higher silver exchange levels. This material can be used in oxygen VSA / PSA processes to produce oxygen at purities above 97%.

Description

Background technique [0001] Oxygen is widely used in a variety of industrial processes and is usually produced by cryogenic distillation of air, or by adsorptive separation of air using zeolites in vacuum or pressure swing mode. For pharmaceuticals, metal cutting and small scale cylinder filling, the oxygen purity must be greater than 95% by volume. Oxygen of this purity precludes traditional adsorptive separations utilizing 5A and X-zeolites, which adsorb nitrogen while passing oxygen and argon. Such separation methods limit the oxygen concentration obtained from air or an air-enriched feed gas to about 95% by volume. So, therefore, the market has to supply it either via liquid oxygen in vacuum bottles or tank trucks or via cylinders. [0002] Pressure and vacuum swing adsorption have been used to separate air into its components for smaller scale production. Low temperature zeolite molecular sieves have been widely used in these processes by taking advantage of their diff...
