Embodiment Construction

[0051] Tables 1-4 show the results of various tests of nonwoven fabrics, the various results of which include the present invention. Table 1 is the test results for the original web construction and Table 2 is the results for the patterned imaging surface of the image transfer device (eg, cylinder 24). Table 3 is the data for the reference increase in added binder and Table 4 is the result for the increase in fabric basis weight.

[0052] "ITD" referred to in the test data stands for "image transfer device" and designates a particular form of device for patterning on the original web prior to adhesive application. In the test data, "20 x 20" indicates that the straight line forming pattern has a 20 lines / inch x 20 lines / inch configuration, which is according to Figures 12 and 13 of U.S. Patent No. 5,098,764, except that the intermediate tapered discharge hole is omitted . The discharge holes are on each corner of the cone (4 holes around the cone). The "20 x 20" pattern was...

Abstract

A hydroentangled nonwoven fabric exhibiting cross-direction extensibility and recovery comprises a nonwoven web of staple length fibers of about 0.8 to 3.0 denier having a basis weight of about 1.0 to 4.0 ounces per square yard. A polymeric binder composition substantially uniformly applied to the nonwoven web imparts desired elasticity to the web, with the fabric exhibiting at least about 50% extensibility in a cross-direction thereof, and at least about 90% recovery in a cross-direction. Patterned hydroentanglement of the web acts to entangle the fibers to provide the fabric with desired performance characteristics.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to nonwoven fabrics exhibiting elasticity, and more particularly to a hydroentangled nonwoven fabric exhibiting extensibility and retraction in the transverse direction, and a method of making the same. The invention also discloses a mat assembly comprising the nonwoven fabric of the invention. Background of the invention [0002] Nonwoven fabrics are used in a very wide variety of applications in which the properties of the fabric design can be advantageously utilized. These types of fabrics differ from traditional woven or knitted fabrics in that the fibers or filaments of the fabric are gathered into a bonded web without the need for traditional weaving processes. The entanglement of the fibers or filaments of the fabric provides the desired integrity to the fabric and it is known that structural integrity can be further enhanced by the application of binder components and the like. [0003] Various paramete...
