Abstract

The present invention provides a way to support frame synchronization within a digital broadcast and interactive system. The transmitter (200) includes an encoder (203, 309) that outputs a Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codeword. The transmitter (200) also includes a framing module configured to generate an LDPC coded frame based on the LDPC codeword and to add a physical layer signaling section for the LDPC codeword that determines modulation and coding information associated with the LDPC coded frame. This physical layer signaling segment is encoded with a forward error correction (FEC) code and has an embedded framing structure that facilitates frame synchronization. The above configuration is particularly suitable for a digital satellite broadcasting system (100).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to communication systems, in particular to digital communication systems. Background technique [0002] Broadcasting systems have accepted the need for high quality transmissions using digital technology. The digital revolution has changed the way broadband services, including audio and video programming and data transmission, are delivered. Satellite communication systems appear as a viable solution to support such broadband services. Thus, it is highly desirable that the modulation and coding be efficient in both power and bandwidth so that the satellite communication system can provide reliable communication in the presence of relatively noisy communication channels. In broadcast applications supported by such systems, fast frame synchronization in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environments needs to be employed in order to avoid negative impact on user perception and to efficiently utilize system resources.
