If physical layer data is not larger than the predetermined number of preamble symbols such that there is excess preamble symbol space, physical layer pipe 0 data comprising link layer signaling and notification data is carried in the excess preamble symbols or the excess preamble symbols are left empty. Different permutation rules may be used to frequency interleave odd-numbered versus even-numbered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing symbols.

Customized virtual broadcast services

A system for representing virtual channels of a broadcast genre type in a display of an IP datacasting receiver is disclosed. Aspects of the invention are applicable to video and audio broadcasting via IP over Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) or IP time slicing over DVB. In one arrangement, the number of content channels available to a user is expanded due to the virtual channels being mixed with broadcasted channels. A profile for a virtual channel may be constructed by either selecting channels or defining a type of program that are preferred to be consumed during a specific time period. A virtual channel may be created by comparing information in the profile that defines preferred channels with transmission units either with genre information or a list of channels that may be stored in a digital receiving device. The genre information may include metadata describing IP addresses, time intervals, names of channels and content. Local content may also be mixed with the virtual channels thereby providing an increased degree of customization of content.

Digital television broadcasting system using coded orthogonal frequency-division modulation and multilevel LDPC convolutional coding

In transmitter apparatus for a digital television (DTV) broadcasting system, internet-protocol (IP) packets of digital television information are subjected to multilevel concatenated Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) coding and low-density parity-check convolutional coding (LDPCCC) before being bit-interleaved and mapped to quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) constellations. The QAM constellations are used in coded orthogonal frequency-division modulation (COFDM) of plural carrier waves up-converted to a radio-frequency broadcast television channel. In receiver apparatus for the DTV broadcasting system the results of de-mapping QAM constellations recovered from demodulating the COFDM carrier waves are de-interleaved, and the constituent LDPCCC codewords are decoded to recover constituent BCH codewords of the multilevel BCH coding. The constituent BCH codewords are decoded to correct remnant bit errors in them. Then, IP packets of digital television information are reconstituted from the systematic data bits in those BCH codewords.

Miniature sub-resonant multi-band vhf-uhf antenna

A novel antenna system for receiving transmissions in the VHF and UHF frequency bands particularly suitable as a miniaturized antenna for UHF reception, such as of digital video broadcasting transmissions. The antenna system utilizes a combination of three techniques including (1) the use of dialect loading using a high dielectric constant ceramic substrate; (2) an antenna dielectrically loaded and tuned to a significantly higher frequency than desired; and (3) use of a tuning circuit to compensate for the frequency offset of the antenna thereby shifting the resonant frequency to cover the entire band. The antenna is intentionally designed to be too small to radiate at the frequency of interest. The antenna element is then ‘forced’ to be tuned to the desired lower frequency using passive (or active) reactive components as part of a tuning circuit. Multi-band operation is achieved by providing a bypass switch to connect the antenna element either to (1) a first receiver without the tuning circuit (i.e. high frequency tuning) or (2) a second receiver with the tuning circuit (i.e. low frequency tuning).

In another embodiment, a system for processing digital video signals for live video applications comprises a memory unit within which a computer program is stored. The computer program instructs the system to process digital video in a predicative manner. Burst transmission

A terrestrial digital video broadcasting (DVB-T) network is used to transmit IP datagrams to receiving devices using multiprotocol encapsulation (MPE). MPE datagram section and, if forward error correction (FEC) is used, MPE-FEC datagram sections may include time-slicing parameters, such as a “delta-t” parameter for specifying a time until the next burst is transmitted and a flag for indicating the end of a burst. Thus, MPE and MPE-FEC datagram sections can be transmitted in bursts. Other types of sections, however, do not include such time-slicing parameters and thus cannot usually be transmitted in bursts. Nevertheless, by assembling a burst including at least one MPE or MPE-FEC datagram section which specifies delta-t and MPE or MPE-FEC datagram section at the end of a burst which indicates its position, other types of sections can benefit from being transmitted in bursts.

Logical and composite channel mapping in an MPEG network

Two additional structures for addition to the Digital Video Broadcasters (DVB) Service Information (SI) for implementation of the MPEG-2 Systems Standard (ISO / IEC 13818-1) are provided: the Logical Channel Table (LCT) and the Composite Channel Table (CCT). The LCT provides the mapping between a Logical Channel Number (LCN) representing a service and the transport stream(TSID) / program number (PN) on which the service can be found. LCT entries may designate either simple conventional channels or Composite Channels. The LCT contains a Composite Channel Indicator (CCI), which when set to "1', indicates that the selected channel is a composite channel. In this case, the LCT entry gives the home channel of the Composite Channel, which provides the CCT to the decoder so that the tuner can be retuned to the actual program designated in the CCT for current viewing. Each entry in the CCT associates a Composite Channel Number (CCN) with a LCN and represents the "present" definition for the composite channel. A simple LCN is used as a key to the LCT to determine the transport stream ID and program number (PN) for the service components in the usual way. As time progresses, the entry for a specific CCN will change; therefore, the CCN is used as a "pointer" to the LCN which is the currently active service for the composite channel. These tables work with conventional MPEG-2 service definitions to decode multi-service transport streams.

Digital video recording system

A digital video recording system (10) includes a video camera (12) directed at a scene of interest to continuously view the scene and generate video images (F) of the scene. An image processor (14) is configured to compare the video image (F) with a previously established reference image (Fr) of the scene to determine if changes have occurred. The image processor includes a memory (20) in which portions of video images (F) are stored, together with the time and date information as to when the image was acquired. A video playback capability (30) allows the memory to be accessed to retrieve the portions of the video images for image reconstruction. System and method of in-service testing of compressed digital broadcast video

A switched digital video broadcast network provides in-service testing of digitized broadcast video signals subject to analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion. The network includes a plurality of gateways, each gateway coupled to video signal sources and sink. Video frames transmitted on the network are subject to analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and compression in an MPEG 2 encoder / decoder. Each gateway and includes a test pattern generator and test measurement analyzer for in-service testing of the video signals. The test pattern generator inserts a test signal on pre-selected lines (22, 23 or 261,262) in a Video Blanking Interval (VBI) and time periods of a video frame. The test signal may be dynamically placed at any location in the frame using concealment techniques The video lines are not seen by television viewers. The test pattern generator and test measurement analyzer are synchronized using vertical integral time code and a trigger packet sent by the transmitting station. The test signals enable both in-service and out-of-service testing to be performed for the entire suite of EIA / TIA 250C standard video tests.
