Embodiment Construction

[0023] The invention will be described with reference to the drawings, wherein like numerals represent all like components.

[0024] As mentioned in the previous paragraphs, in a known sequence of searches, the resulting amplitude can be read from the raised cosine pulse, as a function of the timing lag, while performing the associated idle time. It is only an approximation assuming that the known sequence has the desired properties, ie, the autocorrelation function with a single Dirac pulse. In fact, this autocorrelation also has side lobes, which are based on the exact known sequence / scrambling code, for which precision evaluation has to be taken into account, but can be ignored here for brevity.

[0025] So, if correlations are performed on known sequences isolated from each other in time (eg, by Tc), sampled replicas of the raised cosine pulses can be seen in the sequence of these correlation results.

[0026] In rare cases where the precise on-time is relevant, this will...

Abstract

Apparatus and method for correlating a received communication of a known sequence over a wireless channel. Processing at the required higher sampling rate is achieved through the use of a finite impulse response (FIR) filter (24) having a small number of taps for interpolating samples. This reduces hardware requirement by as much as one-half that of conventional techniques based on over-sampling the received signal, while obtaining amplitude degradation which is no worse than experienced when employing conventional techniques.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention is concerned with the timing resolution required versus the performance penalty suffered when performing a search for a known transmitted signal sequence in a receiver by correlation. The search is performed in a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) receiver during propagation path search or random access channel (RACH) lookahead detection. Background technique [0002] The description of the present invention focuses primarily on the Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) version of a communication system. However, the invention can be applied to almost all known sequence searches in any communication system to search for known transmitted sequences of received signals in the time domain. [0003] There are several purposes why the receiver knows that the sequence of symbols may be sent from a transmitter, such as channel estimation in path search with respect to timing delay, amplitu...
