Heat loss of the water increases significantly and non-linearly with the difference to the ambient air temperature. An important consideration in pool temperature regulation is the amount of time it takes to reheat the water to the temperature that users desire to swim in. In smaller bodies of water, such as a spa, water may be heated at a rate of 40° F. per hour or higher. Large bodies of water such as pools will only typically gain 1-2° F. per hour. For this reason, it may take several hours to get a pool warm enough for swimming.
